New council would hold a lot
of power
Penny Herbert is entitled to her opinions, just as I am to my
own (Letters, Nov. 18). She is not, however, entitled to tell bald-faced lies to
try to discredit the city council candidates she dislikes.
In her letter,
she states that I was a member of something called "Annex to Murrieta
committee." I had never even heard of this committee before reading her letter,
let alone participated in any of its meetings or subscribed to its goals ---ñ
whatever they may have been.
The Local Agency Formation Commission and
the Board of Supervisors agreed that Wildomar residents should have the
opportunity to vote on the question of cityhood. They did not recommend cityhood
or state that "this is the best time for cityhood."
If you actually read
the LAFCO executive director's recommendation or the minutes of the LAFCO board
meeting, you will note several very blunt cautionary statements were made about
fiscal viability and serious concerns were expressed about Wildomar's ability to
sustain itself financially. Both LAFCO and the supervisors recognized that
without questionably legal subsides Wildomar wouldn't be financially
viable.
There are, indeed, ways for a city council to bump up fees, fines
and supplemental charges to increase revenues without the voters' consent. City
council members would have the opportunity to negotiate contracts for services
and set fees without public approval. They would control millions of our
taxpayer dollars.
Voters need to decide if they are willing to entrust
special interest candidates with those powers or select candidates who recognize
and understand the financial challenges.
